4 Ways to Be a Positive Deviant
At Hero Town, one of the lifestyles that we promote is called positive deviance. A positive deviant is someone who acts outside of the norm, but in an uplifting and constructive way.
In Hero Training, we emphasise that positive deviance is important because it takes us out of our comfort zone. That way, when the time comes to step up, we are prepared for the strange looks we might get. So how can we be a positive deviant in our everyday lives? Here are some of our top tips, so go forth and spread the happiness!
Keep a gratitude diary
We may know how much we appreciate our loved ones, but how often do we express it to them? To get those brain juices flowing, we suggest writing a list of people in your life you’re grateful for, and why. Then you can either approach them in person, or write them a letter telling them how what you’re appreciative of.
Say hi to your barista
Hospitality can be a stressful occupation, and often one that goes underappreciated. The next time you go for a coffee run, try smiling or striking up a conversation with the barista. You never know how far a smile and a kind word might go to improving someone’s day.
Perform an act of kindness
Put on your hero cape and perform an act of kindness that enriches someone’s life. You could choose to donate blood or plasma – or if you aren’t a fan of needles, do a big spring clean and donate your old clothes to a charity. These actions can go a long way to helping someone who is in need.
Order dessert first
The next time you go out to dinner with friends or family, try asking the waiter to bring your dessert out before your meal. Your companions might find your choice a bit strange, but we can guarantee they’ll be jealous when the food arrives!
Become an everyday hero
An everyday hero is someone who aspires to do good and have a positive impact on their community and themselves. A major component of being an everyday hero is embracing positive deviance.
