Attendance is required across both days.

The two-day Standard Mental Health First Aid Course is for adults interested in learning how to support other adults.

Evaluations have shown that participating in the Mental Health First Aid course is associated with improved knowledge of mental illness and treatments, first aid strategies, and confidence in supporting others, as well as improved mental health of those who attend, decreased stigmatising attitudes, and increased support provided to others.

So how does it differ to Standard Mental Health First Aid?

Youth MHFA includes more than Standard MHFA, including adolescent development (including how it can interfere with academic achievement, puberty, developing relationships and long-term mental health), non-suicidal self-injury and eating disorders (making it a 14 hour course, rather than a 12 hour course). Critically, it also focuses on understanding “normal teenage behaviour” versus mental health symptoms.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a 14-hour face-to-face course, delivered in Perth by Hero Town over the course of two days. Participants receive a copy of the Youth MHFA Manual and a Certificate of Completion.

Attendance is required across both days.

The two-day Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is for adults working or living with adolescents, those aged between approximately 12 and 18 years. However, the course can be relevant for those helping people who are a little younger or older. This course is particularly suitable for:

  • parents,
  • teachers,
  • lecturers,
  • sports coaches,
  • nurses,
  • social workers,

Any interested adult can attend, though please note this course is not for adolescents to attend. This course is also not a therapy or support group, rather it is an education course to learn how to give first aid to others.

Did you know:

  • Mental health was among the top three national concerns this year and is an issue at the top of young people’s minds.
  • One in four young people are living with a mental disorder.
  • Mental health was identified as a top concern for youth in the region.
  • Young people are most likely to seek help from friends and family over online or community services.
  • The rate of suicide is the highest it has been in 10-plus years, at over 3,0000 lives lost per year.
  • For every death by suicide, it is estimated that as many as 30 people attempt to end their lives. That is 65,300 attempts per year.

Mental health first aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional treatment is received or the crisis resolves.  Youth Mental Health First Aid can improve the capacity of the whole community to respond early and effectively when a young person is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

Evaluations have shown that participating in the Youth Mental Health First Aid course is associated with improved knowledge of mental illness and treatments, first aid strategies, and confidence in supporting others, as well as improved mental health of those who attend, decreased stigmatising attitudes, and increased support provided to others.
